SHIVAJI UNIVERSITY, KOLHAPURShivaji University, established in 1962, is named after the Great Maratha Warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was inaugurated on 18th November, 1962 by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. One of the major objectives behind foundation of this University was to cater to the regional needs of South Maharashtra Education. The jurisdiction of the University is spread over three districts viz. Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara.
About the Department.-
The Department of Sociology was established in the Shivaji University, Kolhapur during the academic year 1970-1971. This year is golden jubilee year of the department. Right from the establishment of the department, it is actively engaged in organizing national level seminars on various themes. This department is the first department in Maharashtra State which has successfully organised Indian Sociological Society’s Conference in 1997. Over the years the department has grown large in terms of academic and research activities, infrastructural development, expansion of faculty and brining out Ph.D. and M. Phil. students.
In 1994-95 UGC has sanctioned to department as a resource centre for Sociology of environment. With due recognition of the earlier achievements of the Department, department has been identified by the UGC under UGC- SAP-DRS-Phase-I with the thrust area of Sociology of Development and Environment in the academic Year 2004-05. In the academic year 2015-16, Department has entered in the UGC- SAP-DRS- Phase III received the Grant of 72 Lakhs plus fellow’s salary. The Department of Sociology is the second department in the subject of Sociology in the Maharashtra State, which has entered in the III Phase of UGC-SAP-DRS.
