SHIVAJI UNIVERSITY, KOLHAPUR

Shivaji University, established in 1962, is named after the Great Maratha Warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was inaugurated on 18th November, 1962 by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. One of the major objectives behind foundation of this University was to cater to the regional needs of South Maharashtra Education. The jurisdiction of the University is spread over three districts viz. Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara.

About the Department.-
The Department of Sociology was established in the Shivaji University, Kolhapur during the academic year 1970-1971. This year is golden jubilee year of the department. Right from the establishment of the department, it is actively engaged in organizing national level seminars on various themes. This department is the first department in Maharashtra State which has successfully organised Indian Sociological Society’s Conference in 1997. Over the years the department has grown large in terms of academic and research activities, infrastructural development, expansion of faculty and brining out Ph.D. and M. Phil. students.

In 1994-95 UGC has sanctioned to department as a resource centre for Sociology of environment. With due recognition of the earlier achievements of the Department, department has been identified by the UGC under UGC- SAP-DRS-Phase-I with the thrust area of Sociology of Development and Environment in the academic Year 2004-05. In the academic year 2015-16, Department has entered in the UGC- SAP-DRS- Phase III received the Grant of 72 Lakhs plus fellow’s salary. The Department of Sociology is the second department in the subject of Sociology in the Maharashtra State, which has entered in the III Phase of UGC-SAP-DRS.


International Sociological Association

The ISA was founded in 1949 under the auspices of UNESCO. The goal of the ISA is to represent sociologists everywhere, regardless of their school of thought, scientific approaches or ideological opinion, and to advance sociological knowledge throughout the world. Its members come from 126 countries. The RC 41 (Population)


The Russian Society of Sociologists

The Russian Society of Sociologists is already 20 years old. The Society was organized in 1989 in the framework of the Soviet Sociological Association, first as a Republican organization, but in 1991 it became independent. In 1992 the Soviet Sociological Association stopped it practices and transmitted its` powers as a member of the International Sociological Associations and coordinator of the regional offices in the territory of Russia passed to the RSS.


Indian Sociological Society, New Delhi.

The Indian Sociological Society was set up in Bombay with the initiative of Prof. G. S. Ghurye, Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Bombay. The Society was registered in December 1951 under the Societies Registration Act. G. S. Ghurye was the Founder-President. Prof. J. V. Fereira followed by Prof. K. M. Kapadia were the Secretaries. Prof. Ghurye served as President of the ISS from 1951 to 1966. The Society started a biannual journal Sociological Bulletin from March 1952. It held seminars/workshops occasionally on selected themes but did not organize large conferences. With the initiative taken by Prof. R. N. Saxena, from the year 1955 onwards six All India Sociological Conferences (AISC) were held in different parts of the country.
